L 21 is an initiative founded by young architects and planners from Leipzig, who are - in view of the situation between the boomtown and the structural crisis of cities - looking for a definition and vision of the city which is geared towards the future. Through exhibiting and working on a series of projects whose themes are based on urban and structural problems evolving from present day, and facing us in the future. L 21 is trying to organise a local platform for a social discourse on architecture and spatial organisation in the 21st Century.

L 21 ist eine Initiative junger Architekten und Planer aus Leipzig, die im Spannungsfeld von Boomtown und Strukturkrise eine zukunftsorientierte Vorstellung von Stadt und Gesellschaft suchen. Durch Bearbeitung und Ausstellung einer Reihe von Projekten, deren Themen auf gegenwärtiger und zukünftiger Problemstellung von Stadt und Stadtstruktur gründen, versucht L 21 eine lokale Plattform für einen gesellschaftlichen Diskurs von Architektur und Raumordnung im 21. Jahrhundert zu organisieren.

The obvious failure of planning according to the motives and methods of the "European City", and the search for new and positive interpretations and ways out of the crisis, led, at the beginning of 2000 to the founding of the L21 network. Rather than engaging in generally accepted planning methods, there were diverging expeditions made into the "terrain vague" of the unknown city, in order to find points of departure for internal, and public, debates. The "Kern-Plasma-Modell" was developed by L21 for the Eastern part of Leipzig, an urban area faced with an 80% proportion of buildings standing empty. The goal formulated by L21, has been to develop new images of reduction and slowness. The classical interpretation of what a city should represent, was reduced to a few "Core ares": islands of traditions with histroy and patina,whereby the remaining substance of the city is interpreted as a breathing "plasma" which has to be programmed by the inhabitants themselves, in the sense of an "urban field-rotation" economy, or an autarchically- designed "patchwork structure". --

Das offensichtliche Scheitern der Planung nach den Motiven und Methoden der "Europäischen Stadt" und die Suche nach neuen, positiven Interpretationen und Auswegen aus der vermeintlichen Krise hat Anfang 2000 zur Gründung des Netzwerkes L21 geführt. Statt allgemeingültiger Planungsansätze waren von Beginn an divergierende Expeditionen in das "Terrain Vague" der unbekannten Stadt, Ansatzpunkt für interne und öffentliche Auseinandersetzung. Das "Kern-Plasma-Modell" wurde von L21 für den Leipziger Osten, einem Stadtgebiet mit Leerständen von bis zu 80% entwickelt. Ziel dabei ist es für "schrumpfende Städte" neue Bilder der Reduktion und der Langsamkeit zu entwerfen. Die klassische Vorstellung von Stadt beschränkt sich auf einige wenige "Kerne": Traditionsinseln mit Geschichte und Patina, die restliche Stadtsubstanz wird als atmendes "Plasma" interpretiert, das im Sinne einer "urbanen Drei-Felder-Wirtschaft" oder einer autark-gestaltbaren "Patchwork-Struktur" von den Bewohnern selbst programmiert werden muss. |
